# Gaming Evolution: Web2 → Web3

The gaming industry has undergone a remarkable evolution over the last few decades. Initially, games were simple, linear experiences but now they are spatial and even immersive considering Virtual and Augmented Reality. Some pivotal points in the timeline of gaming development inspire appreciation of its current state. \
Video games came to life in the 1970s with the release of games like Pong. These were flat 2D games that required a home console to play. Computer gaming became popular just a decade after as arcade games rose to dominance. These were all in the pre-internet gaming era.

The Web2 era sprung up in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the implementation of the Internet with gaming. Online gaming brought multiplayer experiences, digital marketplaces, and social interactions, transforming gaming into a vibrant, interactive community. The earliest games in this era including Ultima Online, Lineage, EverQuest and World of Warcraft, resulted in an explosive growth of the Web2 gaming era. Such meteoric growth follows the market fit of a new gaming paradigm. Virtual economies were one of the contributing components to this speedy growth. Although the infrastructures for immutable record-keeping and true ownership were absent, developers of games like The Sims & Second Life, found a way to build marketplaces where in-game assets could be improved and resold, preparing the foundation for the Web3 gaming era.

Worthy of note, as the gaming industry has advanced so has the revenue opportunities increased. See the chart below for some data. This is because the democratizing of access and creation of games leads to more supply of fresh ideas and hence more innovation in the gaming space.

Now, with the emergence of Web3, we stand on the cusp of a new era. Web3, characterized by its decentralized networks and blockchain technology, is already unlocking unprecedented gaming models for developers and publishers. The market is already estimated to be worth over $23B in 2023 and is projected to get to over $65B by 2027.

Gamereum aims to build an L1 blockchain onboarding Web2 games into Web3 and endow them with the essential features of decentralized gaming on arrival with minimal technological debt and building cost.

The combination of the gap between the web2 & Web3 gaming market size and these trends opens a window of opportunity for the technology Gamereum is building. If there’s already an exodus of games from Web-two to three, then an integration bridge is a strategic positioning to capture some of the market share for Gamereum.

# Ecosystem Overview

At the heart of Gamereum’s ecosystem lies a high-throughput, near-instant finality, and EVM-compatible gaming-specific Layer 1 (L1) blockchain designed for scalability, security, and high performance. Gamereum’s blockchain is engineered to handle the unique demands of gaming, ensuring rapid transaction speeds, low and stable fees, and robust security protocols, by taking a modular approach so each game has a sub-chain where their performance and transaction volume do not congest the entire chain to slow down other games. All sub-chains implement zero-knowledge (zK) protocol to keep their transactions confidential but simultaneously share the robust security of the Gamereum blockchain.

Gamereum implements a zkBFT Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism to keep the blockchain energy efficient, green and with minimal fees. Validator nodes on the Gamereum blockchain network are shared across all the game modules or sub-chains on the blockchain for shared-chain security but are randomly selected for transaction validation with a node monitoring system to keep node uptimes above minimum thresholds to prevent chain downtimes.

The modular and configurable nature of the Gamereum blockchain gives games transitioning to web3 full control over their infrastructure. Sub-chains can be permissioned or permissionless, public or sub-chain-level private transactions leveraging the the zK-interoperability protocol on Gamereum. This is possible with the fully-kitted transitioning and development tools Gamereum makes available to games onboarding web3 to keep transitioning & integration smooth by migrating only the essential components including Asset ownership & tokenization, Wallet integration, Identity authentication, In-game transactions and more.

# Tokenomics

The Gamereum ecosystem is powered by its native token, $GAME, which fuels transactions and incentivizes its growth. The modular zK protocol sub-chain approach unlocks a host of utilities for the Gamereum token.

The Gamereum ecosystem applies a dual token system. The native token is the primary currency implemented in reward and payment systems used for purchasing in-game items and paying for other on-chain services. $GAME is also the network participants’ stake to influence the governance of the ecosystem and protect the network as a validator.

However, each sub-chain can run on its own issued tokens with entirely independent tokenomics. Unlike Ethereum, fees on transactions with these sub-chain tokens do not have to be denominated in $GAME. However, fees collected in other tokens are used to buy $GAME tokens for the ecosystem token reserved or burned.

According to design, players can earn rewards in the form of tokens for achieving in-game objectives. Also, participating in events or contributing to the ecosystem earns you token rewards earmarked for the community.
